Wedell-Williams Air Service Corp. was formed at New Orleans in Aug1929 by race car driver Jimmy Wedell and lumberman H. P. Williams to offer scheduled passenger services to Fort Worth via Baton Rouge, Alexandria, Shreveport, and Dallas. In 1936, the carrier was purchased by Eastern Air Lines for $160,000.

Acquired by North American Aviation and the name was changed in 1930 to Eastern Air Transport. Acquired New York Airways, New York, Philadelphia & Washington Airways & The Ludington Line in 1933. Renamed to E.A.L. in 1934. Acquired Wedell-Williams Air Service Corp.. in 1936. Incorporated as Eastern Air Lines in 1938 with Ed Rickenbacker as President. Acquired Colonial Airlines in 1956, Mackey Airlines in 1966 and Caribair in 1974. Eastern Air Lines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 09Mar1989 and ceased operations on 18Jan1991.
