[ – TWA was formed on 16jul1930 as TRANSCONTINENTAL & WESTERN AIR, through a merger of a part of WESTERN AIR EXPRESS, TAT-MADDUX AIR LINES and PAIC. Acquired MARQUETTE AIRLINES in 1941 and OZARK AIR LINES on 01Mar1986. The present name was adopted in 1950. First operator of Martin 404 (10/51) and Lockheed L1649 Constellation Starliner (6/57). Launched domestic B747 services. Taken over by AMERICAN AIRLINES on 09Apr2001 because of finanicial problems

American Airlines was formed as American Airways in 1930 & became American Airlines on 11Apr1934. Commenced operation on 30Jun1934. Acquired American Export Airlines (which was renamed to American Overseas & sold to Pan Am in 1945), Trans Caribbean Airways in 1971, AirCal in 1986, Reno Air in 2000 and TWA in 2001. US Airways merged in in Feb2013 and the brand continued until 17Oct2015, when American Airlines retired the name
