[ – Surinam Airways was formed in 1953 by private entrepreneurs Ronald Rudi Kappel and Herman van Eyck with the current name in Dutch Guiana. Started operations on 07/Jan/1955. The company was taken over by the Surinamese government and renamed SLM – Surinaamse Luchtvaart Maatschappij on 30/Aug/1962. Upon the country’s independence in Nov1975, the carrier was appointed as the national airline of the Republic of Suriname and renamed back to Surinam Airways
