SWAT (South West Air Transport)

SWAT (South West Air Transport) was established in Nov1946 and started operations in 1949. On 26Mar1959, SWAT merged with Oryx Aviation and the airline was renamed to Suidwes Lugdiens

[ – Air Namibia was established as SWAT (South West Air Transport) in 1946 and commenced operations on 30/Ju/1948. On 26Mar1959, SWAT merged with Oryx Aviation (a small passenger airline established three years earlier) to form Suidwes Lugdiens (South West Airways). This airline merged with Namib Air on 01/Dec/1978 with Namib Air’s name retained. It then had Kalahari Express Airlines integrated in in 2001. Appointed as national carrier in 1987 and in 1991 as a result of independence the name was changed to Air Namibia on 28/Oct/1991. Ceased operations in mid-2002 but restarted. As of 8 Jul2020 the Transportation Commission of Namibia has suspended the carrier’s Scheduled Air Services Licence, citing financial and safety concerns. Namibia’s struggling national airline, This has now been rescinded. As of 11Feb2021 all commercial activities of Air Namibia were suspended and all aircraft returned to Windhoek
