South West African Airways (SWAA) was the first commercial air service in South West Africa (now Namibia). The carrier was formed in early 1931 and regular services began in Aug1931. It was owned by the Greman company Junkers. In 1932, SWAA amalgamated with Union Airways in South Africa, but continued to operate under its own name. In 1935, South African Airways, bought out SWAA for 14,000 rands
[ – SAA was originally formed when the South African Government took over the assets and liabilities of Union Airways and renamed it to South African Airways on 01Feb1934. The airline was initially overseen and controlled by South African Railways and Harbours Administration. It was soon enlarged by the acquisition of South West African Airways on 01Feb1935. On 24May1940, all operations were suspended due to WWII. .On 05Dec2019, the Government of South Africa announced that SAA would enter into bankruptcy, as the airline has not turned a profit since 2011 and ran out of money
