Shawnee Airlines began scheduled commuter services in Jul1968 linking Herndon Airport, Orlando, with Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Gainesville, Ocala, Atlanta (Georgia), Freeport, Nassau, Bimini and West End in the Bahamas, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Tampa. Shawnee was a subsidiary of the Root Company. Founded by David D. Latham. Unfortunately strong competition from forced a shutdown on 28Dec1972. The airline returned on 29Mar1973 with a scaled-down route system and an emphasis on flights between Florida and the Bahamas. Florida Air Lines took over Shawnee in 1975 and briefly operated it as a subsidiary before a second shutdown in Nov1977. Shawnee was resurrected by Air Miami in 1978 and continued to fly on a much smaller scale to the Bahamas and Keys until 1980
