SAA was originally formed when the South African Government took over the assets and liabilities of Union Airways and renamed it to South African Airways on 01Feb1934. The airline was initially overseen and controlled by South African Railways and Harbours Administration. It was soon enlarged by the acquisition of South West African Airways on 01Feb1935. On 24May1940, all operations were suspended due to WWII. .On 05Dec2019, the Government of South Africa announced that SAA would enter into bankruptcy, as the airline has not turned a profit since 2011 and ran out of money
