Rutas Aereas de Colombia was formed as RAS in Jan1955 in Medillin in conjunction with SAM. A year after the name change the airline moved to Bogota
– [Avianca (Aerovias del Continente Americana) was founded as a result of a merger between SCADTA (founded in 1919) and SACO (Servicio Aereo Colombiano). It was the first South American to fly into the US (Miami – 1947). The name Avianca was retained when the name changed in 2004. SAM was absorbed into the parent company in 2010.
