RANA (Rhodesian and Nyasaland Airways) was formed on 12Oct1933 by the merger of two small privately owned companies (Christowitz Air Services and Rhodesian Aviation Company). On 01Feb1940, the company was purchased by the government of Southern Rhodesia and transformed into an air force communications squadron became the Southern Rhodesia Communications Squadron. The Squadron, became Rhodesia Aviation Services after the war and resumed its commercial activities. In 1946 the Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland Governments decided that this service should become Central African Airways, capital for the new airline being provided on the basis of 50 per cent by Southern Rhodesia, 35 per cent by Northern Rhodesia and 15 per cent by Nyasaland
