Ray Petersen started Ray Petersen Flying Service in 1937, based in Bethel, Alaska, supporting the platinum mining operations in Platinum, Alaska. In 1941, Ray moved his headquarters to Anchorage. In 1943, he purchased Bristol Bay Air Service and Jim Dodson Air Service
WIEN claimed to have been the oldest scheduled airline in Alaska having being formed as NORTHERN AIR TRANSPORT in 1924. Renamed to WIEN AIRWAYS of ALASKA shortly after to WIEN ALASKA AIRLINES in 1935. During this period FERGUSON AIRWAYS was aquired (1949) and BYERS AIRWAYS in 1956. In 1968, WIEN ALASKA AIRLINES merged with NORTHERN CONSOLIDATED AIRLINES to form WIEN CONSOLIDATED AIRLINES. This airline was renamed to WIEN AIR ALASKA in in 1973 and eventually the name was shortned to just WIEN. On 28Nov1984 Wien Air Alaska began bankruptcy proceedings and finally folded on 25Oct1985
