Northeast Airlines was formed as BKS Aerocharter in 1952 and started operations in Feb1972 (BKS were the founders’ initials – i.e. James Barnby, T D ‘Mike’ Keegan and Cyril Stevens). The airline’s name was changed to BKS Air Transport at the end of 1953 and was renamed from BKS Air Transport to Northeast Airlines on 01Nov1970. In Jul1973, the airline became part of the British Airways group. By 1976 Northeast had been fully integrated into British Airways. The last Northeast flights operated on 31Mar1976
[ – British Airways (ii) – Following the recommendations of the 1969 Edwards Report that a new British Airways Board, managing both BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corp.), BEA (British European Airways), and the two regional British airlines Cambrian Airways based at Cardiff, and Northeast Airlines based at Newcastle upon Tyne, was constituted on 01Apr1972, establishing British Airways as an airline on 31Mar1974. BA started operations on 01Apr1974. British Asia Airways, a subsidiary based in Taiwan, was formed in March 1993 to operate between London and Taipei. The carrier acquired BCAL (British Caledonian Airways) (1988) and Dan-Air (1992). In Jul2008, British Airways announced a merger plan with Iberia, another flag carrier airline in the Oneworld alliance, wherein each airline would retain its original brand. bmi was purchased on 30Mar2012
