JAL was founded as JAPANESE AIRLINES on 01Aug1951 by a group of private investors and initially restricted it’s operations to domestice services using crews and aircraft leased from Northwest Airlines, commencing operations on 25Oct1951 . In 1953 the company wes reorganised as JAPAN AIR LINES and took over as the flag carrier for Japan. Renamed to Japan Airlines International on 01Apr2004 following merger with JAPAN AIR SYSTEMS. On 01Oct2006, Japan Airlines International and Japan Airlines Domestic merged into a single brand, Japan Airlines International. On 01Apr2008, JAL merged the operations of its subsidiary Japan Asia Airways (JAA) into JAL mainline operations
