♦ KNILM was founded on 16Jul1928 as the NILM (did not start operations) by a group of 32 Netherlands Indian investors but to prevent confusion with an existing insurance company Nillmij, it was appended with the Koninklijk (Royal) title on 15Oct1928, commencing operations on 01Nov1928. KNILM was officially disbanded on 01Aug1947, and the remaining assets were transferred to KLM, which created the KLM Interinsulair Bedrijf. On 21Dec1949, following the Dutch–Indonesian Round Table Conference, negotiations were held between the Indonesian government with KLM about the creation of a national Indonesian airline. President Soekarno decided upon ‘Garuda Indonesian Airways’ (GIA) as the new airline’s name. In preparation for the eventual transfer over to Indonesian airline staff. Garuda Indonesia started operations on 28Dec1949. It was nationalised in 1954. Acquired de Kroonduif in 1962, which was a KLM subsidiary later was renamed to Merpati. International and regional passenger and cargo airline ♦
