♦ Freedom Airlines started as a division of the Binghamton, New York-based, Commuter Airlines by Jerry Winstom. Commuter Airlines began operations in 1964 and focused on linking its Binghamton base with larger cities in the region. In 1980, the carrier’s owners entered into an agreement to provide feeder service to United Airlines at United’s Cleveland hub under a separate division named Freedom Airlines utilising Convair 580 aircraft. Once the agreement with United ended, Freedom continued to operate the Cleveland routes independently and added additional routes in the surrounding area.
The two airlines continued to operate as two separately until 1982 when Commuter Airlines discontinued its Binghamton route system, sold the smaller aircraft it had been operating in that region and moved the company’s headquarters to Cleveland. With these changes, the Commuter Airlines name was dropped and all operations were conducted under the Freedom Airlines name. Freedom Airlines continued to expand and operate until 1984 when the company’s founder passed away and the carrier ceased operations ♦
