Daimler Hire established Daimler Air Hire as a private air hire company on 07Jun1919. In 1921 Daimler Air Hire merged with the assets of Aircraft Transport and Travel to form Daimler Airway on 09Sep1921. Commenced operations on 02Apr1922 from Croydon to Paris using “cabin boys” on their aircraft. Ceased operations on 01Apr1924 and merged with British Marine Air Navigation, Instone Air Lines & Handley Page Transport to form IMPERIAL AIRWAYS. Unfortunately had the first fatal accident involving a scheduled domestic carrier in 1923
[ – BA traces it’s routes back to 25Aug1919 when it’s forerunner company, AT&T (Aircraft Transport & Travel), launched the world’s first daily international scheduled air service between London and Paris [In 1924, Britain’s four main fledgling airlines, which had by then evolved into Instone Air Lines, Handley Page Transport, Daimler Airways and British Marine Air Navigation, merged to form Imperial Airways
British Airways (i) was formed on 30Sep1935 by the merger of United Airways, Hillman’s Airways, Spartan Airline and known as Allied British Airways. On 29Oct1935, the name was changed to British Airways (i). Joined by British Continental Airways in 1936
British Airways (i) Merged with Imperial Airways to form BOAC in 1940
BEA was originally based at Northolt and took over the RAF transport wing. In 1947 took over several airlines after AAJC was ceased. (Railway Air Services, Great Western & Southern Airlines, Isle of Man Air Services, Scottish Airways, Highland Airways, North Eastern Airways, West Coast Air Services, Air Commerce and Western Isles Airways). Later acquired Channel Island Airways and Allied Airways (same year)
British Airways (ii) was formed in 1972 by a merger of BOAC, BEA, BEA Airtours, Northeast Airlines, Cambrian Airways and BEA Helicopters and started operations on 01Apr1974. Acquired BCAL (1988), Dan Air (1992) and Brymon European Airways (1993). Launch customer for B777-200ER in 1997. Now privately owned (National carrier for the UK)
