– CNAC was established in 1928 as China Airways by Curtiss-Wright. Pan Am bought 45% of the shares in 1933. Initially flew from Shanghai to Peking and then moved to Chungking because of the invading Japanese in 1937, merging with Chinese Air Company to form the CNAC. It flew the ‘hump’ between India and China. The downfall of CNAC’s operations came on 09Nov1949, when managing director of CNAC, Colonel CY Liu, and general manager of CATC (Central Aviation Transport Corporation), Colonel CL Chen with a skeleton crew defected with 12 aircraft in unauthorized take-offs from Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport to Communist-controlled China]
