♦ British Midland International (bmi) was established in 1938 as Air Schools by Captain Roy Harben. Renamed to Derby Aviation in 1949 and in 1953, Derby Aviation ceased flying training, following the award of a licence to operate scheduled flights from Burnaston and Wolverhampton to Jersey. Wolverhampton Aviation was merged in in 1954 and domestic scheduled flights within the United Kingdom began the same year. The airline was renamed again to Derby Airways in 1959. Took over the Birmingham based routes of Executive Air Transport in 1962. On 01Oct1964, after buying the Manchester Airport-based scheduled and charter airline Mercury Airlines, the company changed its name to British Midland Airways (BMA) and moved operations from Burnaston to the recently opened East Midlands Airport. The assets of London City Airways were acquired in 1990. The ‘Airways’ was dropped in 1985 leaving British Midland. BMED was fully integrated into BMI on 28Oct2007. BMI was then rebranded to British Midland International (bmi) in late 2010. Integrated into British Airways in Oct2012
