♦ Barrier Air has its origins in Great Barrier Airlines which was formed by Jim Bergman in 1983, starting operations on 02Dec1983. In 1995 Great Barrier Airlines took a controlling share in Air Coromandel. It began on the 09Oct1986 when Air Services Whitianga took over the air charter and airline section of the Mercury Bay Aero Club Inc. which had been operating as Mercury Airlines. The new company, which was to trade under the name Air Coromandel. Air services to Whitianga and the Coromandel Peninsula eventually petered out in the 1990s. Meanwhile, in early 2015, coinciding with a change in management, and the purchase of an ex-Bering Air Cessna Grand Caravan, the name of the airline was changed from Great Barrier Airlines to Barrier Air. On 16Dec2021 Barrier Air reintroduced an air service to Whitianga reflecting its Air Coromandel connections ♦
