♦ Airwork was founded in 1928 by Nigel Norman and Alan Muntz, with the opening of the private Heston Aerodrome in Middlesex, when it trained pilots and flew pleasure trips. Also operated at Shoreham and Perth. Ceased flying during the war and recommenced in 1946. During the early post-World War II years, charter flights using Handley Page Hermes and Vickers Viking airliners, primarily flying out of Blackbushe Airport. Used on Berlin Airlift. Acquired Transair in 1958. By the time Airwork merged with Hunting-Clan to form BUA (British United Airways) in Jul1960, the former’s air transport subsidiaries already included Airwork Helicopters, Air Charter, Bristow Helicopters, Channel Air Bridge, Transair and Morton Air Services

BA started operations on 01Apr1974. British Asia Airways, a subsidiary based in Taiwan, was formed in March 1993 to operate between London and Taipei. The carrier acquired BCAL (British Caledonian Airways) (1988) and Dan-Air (1992). In Jul2008, British Airways announced a merger plan with Iberia, another flag carrier airline in the Oneworld alliance, wherein each airline would retain its original brand. bmi was purchased on 30Mar2012
