AIR CHARTER was founded in 1947. It was Freddie Laker’s first entry into owning an airline using Bovingdon and Croydon. Air Charter inaugurated its first vehicle ferry service between Southend and Calais using a Bristol 170 Mark 32 Super Freighter on 14/Apr/1955. Also was used on Berlin Airlift. Initially a car ferry service. These Bristol 170s were the last flying operations of the type, which had been employed on charter runs as far afield as Christmas Island during its career with Air Charter. In January 1959, Air Charter became a subsidiary of the Airwork group. Air Charter’s operations were absorbed into the newly formed BUA, as a result of the Airwork — Hunting-Clan merger in Jun1960
[ – On 30/Nov/1970, Caledonian Airways acquired British United Airways (BUA) from British and Commonwealth (B&C) for £6.9 million and the combined airline was known for over a year as Caledonian / BUA before adopting British Caledonian Sep1971. BCal ceased to exist as a legal entity at 00.01 hrs. on 14/Apr/1988 when it merged into British Airways

[ – British Airways (ii) – Following the recommendations of the 1969 Edwards Report that a new British Airways Board, managing both BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corp.), BEA (British European Airways), and the two regional British airlines Cambrian Airways based at Cardiff, and Northeast Airlines based at Newcastle upon Tyne, was constituted on 01Apr1972, establishing British Airways as an airline on 31/Mar/1974. BA started operations on 01Apr1974. British Asia Airways, a subsidiary based in Taiwan, was formed in March 1993 to operate between London and Taipei. The carrier acquired BCAL (British Caledonian Airways) (1988) and Dan-Air (1992). In Jul2008, British Airways announced a merger plan with Iberia, another flag carrier airline in the Oneworld alliance, wherein each airline would retain its original brand. bmi was purchased on 30/Mar/2012
